What it is: It is an organic compound of sulfur, with chemical formula (CH3)2 SO2, is water soluble and odorless, and contains about 34% elemental sulfur. MSM is a natural component of the environment that can be found in a variety of foods, such as milk, cereal, fruit and vegetables. It comes from the oxidation of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and is part of the natural cycle of sulfur, thus providing a source of sulfur for the necessary animal methionine.

How it works: Although the special mechanism of MSM has not been fully clarified, some of its principal properties are to inhibit the transmission of pain impulses along the main networks of the nervous system (C fibers) that transmit the signal from the damaged tissue to the brain, and to reduce inflammation and muscle spasm (wounds and inflammations can cause muscle spasm). Moreover, it contributes to the reconstruction of collagen and hyaluronic acid, components found in large quantity in skin and tissue and helps reduce the existence of skin stains. In research conducted in Oregon Health Sciences University, in hundreds of patients treated for many years with MSM doses higher than 2 gr/day, there were no serious signs of toxicity.
