Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus)

What it is: Butcher’s broom is a thorny shrub of the Liliaceae family, very drought resistant. It contains a variety of structures, known as ruscogenins.

How it works: Butcher’s broom contains glycosides, flavonoids and saponins, neoruscogenin and ruscogenin, substances that are its active component in many foods. Research has shown that the extract of butcher’s broom can cause vasoconstriction, helping in circulatory diseases. The administration of butcher’s broom, with its decongestant and anti-inflammatory properties, contributes to the reduction of pain and edema, and it seems to reduce the sense of fatigue in lower limbs.
