What it is: It is a non-metal chemical element with the symbol I. It is a basic trace element of the human body, which normally contains 14 mg of this element.

How it works: Iodine is mainly concentrated in the thyroid gland, which is responsible for the secretion of hormones that contain iodine, thyroxine being the most important of them. Thyroxine plays a key role in maintaining a normal metabolism for all cells of the body. Iodine deficiency may lead to goiter.
